Interview with Mom’s Choice Award-Winner Karen Bonnici

Mom’s Choice Awards is excited to announce another post in our interview series where we chat with the inventors, designers, publishers, and others behind some of our favorite family-friendly products.


Welcome, Mom’s Choice readers! Today we were able to speak with Karen Bonnici, the founder and CEO of Super Blanky by Dreamighty. This MCA winner knows firsthand about the importance of comfort and self-love, especially in the aftermath of serious illness. Her snuggly wearable blankets (that let kids feel like superheroes) are versatile for indoor and outdoor use. They’re a favorite at sleepovers, camping trips, and even Halloween. Kids enjoy wearing them as capes for play or wrapping them around their laps for extra coziness around a campfire. They’re available for adults, as well — offering wearable comfort for everyone!

MCA: Karen, we’re delighted that you could join us. To start the interview, would you tell us something about yourself?

I’m a lifelong creator, storyteller, and entrepreneur. For nearly three decades, I worked as a storyteller and musician while raising my two kids and selling handmade crafts at local fairs. During this time, I invented Super Blanky, which became one of the products I showcased at these events.

Over the years, I built the Dreamighty brand alongside my other work, eventually transitioning to focus fully on designing innovative products for families.

As a breast cancer survivor, I know all too well the importance of comfort, self-love, the support of others, and the belief that we can overcome hard things. These values have deeply influenced my work and the mission of Dreamighty, making our products more than just cozy blankets—they’re symbols of strength and resilience.

When I’m not working on Dreamighty or Super Blanky, I love spending time with family and friends, enjoying life by the lake in Michigan, and traveling to explore new places.

MCA: Tell us about the creation of your company and your current role.

Dreamighty began as a passion project to create products that bring comfort and fun to people of all ages. The idea for Super Blanky started as a homemade gift for my nieces and nephew. After applying for a patent, I began selling the product at local craft fairs, where I had the opportunity to gather feedback and refine the design based on customer input. This process not only improved the product but also helped me realize the demand for it.

Today, as the founder and CEO of Dreamighty, I oversee product development, marketing, and sales while continuing to expand our product lines to inspire joy and creativity in families everywhere.

MCA: What needs were you trying to fill when you created the Super Blanky?

I wanted to create a blanket that wasn’t just cozy but also inspiring. The Super Blanky is more than a blanket—it’s a wearable cape that sparks creativity, fosters imaginative play, and helps kids feel like the superheroes they truly are, instilling a sense of empowerment.

MCA: It’s such a wonderful idea. Please tell us about the research that went into the product’s unique features.

The design of Super Blanky includes a patented sleeve feature, allowing kids to wear it hands-free as a cape or wrap up in it as a traditional blanket. The idea came from observing how kids naturally use blankets for play and comfort. I tested prototypes with family and friends to ensure the design was practical, fun, and safe. The fabric is soft and gentle on the skin, and the product includes a matching mask to further spark creativity.

We selected our designs through a mix of product research and intentionality. Our superhero-inspired styles are designed to be gender-neutral while still appealing to a broad range of kids. For example, we included colors and themes that resonate with little girls to empower them to see themselves as heroes. Each design aims to inspire creativity, confidence, and imaginative play.

Our message to every child is included right on the package:
“Welcome to the world of Super Blanky®, designed especially for YOU! Wrap yourself in a magical embrace and begin your adventure to far-off lands with endless possibilities. So, little dreamer, snuggle up tight and let your imagination take flight!”

MCA: Could you tell us a bit more about your brand?

The Dreamighty brand, which includes both Super Blanky for kids and Dreamighty blankets for adults, is more than just a line of cozy blankets. Super Blanky offers warmth, emotional comfort, and a creative outlet. Its wearable cape design encourages active play and imagination, supporting mental and physical well-being while reviving the joy of storytelling, adventure, and self-expression in today’s screen-driven world.

Dreamighty blankets for adults carry the same spirit of comfort and empowerment. Designed as wearable blanket capes, they serve as a reminder that we can tackle life’s challenges with resilience. Together, the Dreamighty brand symbolizes hope, inspiring confidence and offering comfort during life’s toughest moments—whether it’s a child imagining themselves as a superhero with a Super Blanky or an adult finding solace in the cozy embrace of a Dreamighty blanket.

MCA: What age group was Super Blanky designed for?

Super Blanky is designed for children ages 3 and up, though we’ve found that kids of all ages—and even adults—love its versatility and comfort.
We currently offer four unique designs: T-Rex, Zapzing, Starpow, and Fairybloom. Each design has its own character and theme, carefully crafted to inspire kids and spark their imaginations, foster creativity, confidence, and a sense of being loved and capable.

Here’s a quick summary of each design:

  • Starpow: A galactic adventure awaits with this colorful superhero-inspired design—reminding kids how much they’re loved, adored, and capable of shining like a star in their very own stories.
  • Zapzing: This electrifying design sparks creativity and inspires kids to be heroes of their own adventures—reminding them they’re capable of electrifying the world with their unique gifts.
  • Fairybloom: A magical escape into enchanted gardens and fairy-tale dreams—a reminder of how children are capable of weaving their very own fairy tales.
  • T-Rex: Roar into prehistoric adventures with this dino-inspired blanket. This design reminds kids they’re capable of braving their very own story.

Do the kids love wearing the masks, too?

The masks are a huge hit. They truly ignite kids’ imaginations, letting them fully immerse themselves in their own superhero, fairy-tale, or dino-filled adventures.

MCA: What kind of feedback have you received about these products?

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Parents love the quality and creativity it inspires in their children, while kids adore how fun and cozy it is. We’ve also heard from educators and therapists who’ve found it to be a great tool for imaginative play and emotional regulation.

MCA: What is next for you and your product line? Do you have other products in the works?

We’re expanding our product line to include new designs and additional items, such as wearable beach towels and other cozy creations under the Dreamighty brand. Our goal is to continue innovating products that bring comfort and inspiration to families.
