What I Needed 19 years ago…

Once upon a time, in November 2001 to be precise, I was a young mother to an 8-month-old, living on a tight income.

I had just missed my period and was even more exhausted than normal.

My mind filled with anxious thoughts. After all, we were moving in a week and I hadn’t planned to have two children 16 months apart in age!

I didn’t have access to a vehicle and Google wasn’t what it was today. Plus, Dollar Stores had not yet started stocking cheap pregnancy tests.

If only I had had a compilation of home pregnancy tests I could have tried in the comfort of my own home for mere pennies, I might have saved myself a trip on public transportation to the doctor with an over-tired baby.

Back to Today

With the help of my now-best friend Google, I scoured the internet to bring you some of the most reliable pregnancy tests you can do in the privacy of your own home using ingredients nearly everyone has on hand. To save you the inconvenience I endured 19 years ago.

Aside from one or two common household items, all you’ll need is your own freshly collected urine and a clean, clear container that you don’t mind putting your urine in.

1. The Toothpaste Pregnancy Test

For this simple home pregnancy test, you’ll need white toothpaste.

The blue stuff won’t work because you’re looking for even the slightest hint of color change when you mix in a few drops of fresh urine with a dab of toothpaste. It’s that simple.

2. The Bleach Pregnancy Test

If you’ve got bleach, you’ve got a simple method to test for pregnancy at home.

First, pour the bleach into a clean, clear container. Then collect your urine and add an equal amount of urine to the bleach so you have about a half and half mixture.

If you’re pregnant, the bleach-urine mixture will bubble and fizz so allow room in your container for any kind of expansion. No reaction likely means you’re not pregnant.

Just keep in mind that you’ll want to take the proper precautions to protect your clothing and skin if you do this test.

3. The Vinegar Pregnancy Test

Quite possibly the cheapest test on this list, the vinegar home pregnancy test requires you to mix regular white vinegar with fresh urine.

Many women have reported that this test is extremely accurate. Plus vinegar is cheap and harmless so you have absolutely nothing to lose by trying it out.

4. The Sugar Pregnancy Test

Even if you’re not a baker, everyone has sugar on hand, right?

Put a few small spoonfuls of white sugar in a bowl and add some of your freshly collected urine to it.

If you’re pregnant, the sugar will clump up. If the sugar dissolves effortlessly in the urine, chances are you’re not pregnant.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide and Tylenol Pregnancy Test

You’re really going to start to feel like a scientist if you do this test.

You’ll need two uncoated white Tylenol tablets and some hydrogen peroxide. You’ll begin by crushing the two Tylenol tabs then add a couple tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to it. Mix this up then add in some of your freshly collected urine.

If you’re pregnant, the mixture will turn blue. If there is no color change, you’re probably not pregnant.

Wrapping Up 5 Ways to Test for Pregnancy…At Home!

A woman knows her body best. If you use these tests – and use as many as you want as often as you want – and you keep getting a “not pregnant” result even though you’re confident you are in fact pregnant, the best thing you can do is go see your doctor for a more definitive test.

By the way, I did end up finding out I was pregnant in November 2001. My oldest two children are in fact 16 months apart. If I had known about these do-it-yourself home pregnancy tests in 2001, you bet I would have tried them ALL out! Nothing fascinates me more than the reaction of simple household ingredients.

And nothing would have been better than to test for pregnancy in the comfort of my own home while my 8-month-old happily napped in his bed.

As it is, I hope that my research helps out other Moms, especially those moms on a tight income, have little ones at home, or who don’t have access to get a pregnancy test.

I know how stressful it can be to wonder whether or not you’re pregnant. And now you don’t have to wonder! With any of these common, cheap ingredients, you’ll be able to save time and money by testing for pregnancy at home.
