Each morning as I wake up for the fifth time, exhausted and a little cranky, I think of the day that lies ahead of me and the overwhelm kicks into gear. Then I look over at my sweet baby waking in his bassinet. His whole face lights up, thrilled to see his favorite person staring back at him. His smile & joy are contagious! I light up right back at him.
Right now there’s so much going on in my life, just like any other parent. Between baby, toddler, husband, friends and family, it’s hard to have a second for yourself. Sometimes you want to just hide in bed, with the covers thrown over your face. Hiding from the world.
I can honestly say that the 100% pure bliss that radiates from my son, motivates me to keep going and stay positive.
We could all learn a lot from our babies. They live a life so simple and happy. Their cries are simply a means of communication, and once their needs are met they go back to their jubilant selves.
How do we all stray so far from this way of being? Where does our peace go?
We get overwhelmed, we struggle, we doubt ourselves. We pick up on negativity and spread it around. People tell us we can’t do this, and we have to do that. We believe them. Letting society and others define the rules of our lives.
Especially when we enter parenthood. Going from being taken care of to the one providing the care. We tell ourselves that there will be time for happiness later, right now it’s time to work hard and care for others. We put ourselves aside because that is the one thing we can sacrifice.
How can we get back to our happy, carefree selves? After all we were all babies once, so there has to be something inside of us that remembers that way of being.
I think the first step is simply not taking life so seriously. We stress and micromanage, trying to force everything into place. Forgetting about fun, adventure and enjoying the fruits of our labor. We don’t leave time to nurture ourselves; body, mind & soul.
Let’s change this and start enjoying this beautiful gift of life! Of course life is so challenging, especially as a parent. Though it is your choice what you focus on and what experiences you bring into your life. Do you want to focus on how hard it is and be a victim or to find a way, and simply start enjoying life (No. Matter. What.)?
Make plans that are guaranteed to bring laughs. If there’s a way to work smarter, not harder, do it! If something doesn’t feel right, let it go and find another way. When you have a minute of peace, take it. Mediate, get a massage, do yoga. Treat yourself. Understand that you deserve it! Go after what feels good to you, and be gentle with yourself.
When in doubt, embody the joy of a sweet little baby.

Seems like just the other day I was rocking my babies to sleep them my grand babies and even them have out grown this……….the years go by so very fast!
Life lesson learned are they grow up so fast enjoy your kids while you can
That is so true! It all happens too fast.
Kids grow up so fast and before you know it they are off getting married and having their own life. I think it is very important to take time and forget about what needs to be done and just have fun and enjoy life even if it is just every now and then.
Agreed! Well said, Beverly.
This is a wonderful post. I am a grandma to a soon to be 2 month old and a 7 yr. old and me & my granddaughter’s mama were just talking yesterday of how important it is to live (and enjoy) in the moment and not constantly think ahead and how it will be then. I am going to share this article with her and my son, they will appreciate it. Thank you!
Glad you liked this, Kristi! And thanks for sharing with your family! You are so right about enjoying the moment.
Wow, I really needed to read this – you hit on exactly where I am now. I need to go back to a carefree attitude because I don’t want my kids to feel any of my uneasiness. Great post!
So glad to hear you found this post helpful, HT! You’re right that kids pick up on the subtleties of our behavior much more than we realize. Thanks for visiting and for the comment.
that is so true. I learned a lot from my son too. He taught me more than he knows.
It’s a learning experience for all of us!
I can’t imagine when my little boys won’t be so little anymore. It kinda scares me. I don’t want to miss a thing about their childhood.
Agreed. It goes by far too fast.
