Mom’s Choice Awards is excited to announce another post in our interview series where we chat with the inventors, designers, publishers, and others behind some of our favorite family-friendly products.
Welcome, Mom’s Choice readers! For today’s interview, we’re speaking with writer Aurore Collin, creator of the heartwarming children’s tale (and MCA award-winner) Fluffy Henri Loves His Family. This heartwarming tale, complete with illustrations that transport young readers to the beautiful south of France, reminds children what’s truly important in life.
MCA: Thanks for joining us today, Aurore. To get the interview started, why not tell us about yourself?
I am a lover of words, people, and finding wonder in life. Throughout my travels I have discovered people often play certain roles that confine them to a narrative. These narratives can otherwise be changed through their thoughts.
I was born in France, a country known for its art. However, France is oftentimes a suffocating place for the evolution of self. I studied marketing and business in business school but I have always felt a calling for disrupting the norms. I like to engage in projects that make you think outside the box and have found success in positioning my mind to step outside my own limitations. America has blessed me with a beautiful life where I can be myself and reinvent myself as I go.
MCA: What was your path to becoming a writer like? What inspired you?
In real life, I often absorb rather than add to the noise especially since English is my second language. Expressing myself in writing has always felt more comfortable. It allows me to reflect, ponder, and craft my thoughts with care. I began writing stories for children by accident, really. It all started when I spent time with my niece and nephew in Japan for the first time. Their delight and curiosity sparked something within me. I realized that storytelling had the power to shape young minds, to inspire wonder and understanding in a way few other things could.
My journey officially began when I decided to put my life story on paper. I wanted to create narratives that were not only entertaining but also taught valuable lessons about kindness, resilience, gratitude and the beauty of diversity. The process of writing for children became a way for me to connect with the part of myself that still believes in magic and possibilities. It’s been an incredible journey of growth, both personally and professionally, as I continue to discover the endless potential of storytelling.
MCA: What was your inspiration for writing Fluffy Henri Loves His Family?
My childhood in Provence. As a child, we never traveled and we couldn’t afford many things. It shaped the way I saw the world. In the eyes of a child, everything seemed unattainable until I changed my reality. My life partner and people around me all influenced this first book. When I saw how family dynamics work regardless of money, I realized that money does not fill our hearts, it is instead the love of people around you. When I lost my mother in my 20s I also realized how fleeting life can be. It made me aware of each moment and its fragility.
These experiences deeply influenced the themes of Fluffy Henri Loves His Family. I wanted to create a story that not only entertains but also imparts valuable lessons about appreciating the intangible treasures we often overlook. Through Henri’s eyes, young readers can explore the notion that happiness isn’t tied to material possessions but rather to the warmth of companionship and the comfort of a loving family.
Writing this book was a cathartic journey for me, reflecting on my childhood and the lessons I’ve learned about gratitude and the essence of true wealth. I hope that through this series, both children and parents can find joy in life’s simple pleasures and recognize the beauty in the everyday moments that so often pass us by unnoticed.
Ultimately, my wish is for this first book to be a source of inspiration and reflection, encouraging families to cherish each other and the time they share, just as I have come to cherish my own memories and the people who have shaped my life.
MCA: What a beautiful mission. So this title will be part of a series, then?
Yes, this is the first of a book series dedicated to children learning about subject matters that often take us a lifetime to learn. Each book is crafted to spark meaningful conversations between parents and children, fostering connections that extend beyond the pages. By addressing universal themes in a relatable and engaging manner, I hope to create stories that resonate with families everywhere, encouraging them to cherish the simple joys and profound lessons life offers. As the series unfolds, I am excited to explore new topics and adventures with Henri and his family, inviting readers to join us on this journey of discovery and growth.
MCA: Could you provide readers with a brief synopsis of the book?
Fluffy Henri, an adorable dog from Provence, finds himself wanting the life of his neighbor Louis. In the story we find out Henri has far more than he thought right at home with his loving family.
Through Henri’s journey, children are encouraged to appreciate the simple joys and the love that surrounds them. As Henri begins to understand the value of what he already has, readers are gently reminded of the importance of gratitude and the beauty in everyday moments. The tale unfolds with vibrant illustrations and heartwarming dialogue, capturing the essence of family bonds and the happiness that comes from within. This story is a delightful reminder that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and that true wealth is measured in love and contentment.
MCA: What are some of the key lessons found in the book?
Through the charming adventures of Fluffy Henri, readers are invited to pause and reflect on their own lives. By observing Henri’s journey, they can learn to appreciate the small, everyday moments that often go unnoticed. The story serves as a gentle nudge to slow down and savor the simple pleasures that life offers, fostering a sense of contentment and well-being.
Fluffy Henri’s tale is more than just an entertaining read; it’s a tool for sparking meaningful conversations between parents and children. As families read together, they can discuss the themes of gratitude and the importance of cherishing what they have. This shared experience not only strengthens family bonds but also instills valuable life lessons that can shape a child’s perspective for years to come.
Ultimately, Fluffy Henri Loves His Family is a celebration of love, connection, and the joy that comes from recognizing the abundance in our lives. Through its engaging narrative and vibrant illustrations, the book encourages readers of all ages to embrace a mindset of gratitude and to find happiness in the here and now.
MCA: What kind of response from readers have you received?
Both children and adults can relate to feelings of ingratitude or loneliness. In our busy lives, we often overlook the simple joys, as the saying goes, “stop and smell the roses.” Children may connect with either Henri or Louis, but ultimately, they learn to appreciate each other’s viewpoints, leading to a greater understanding and empathy between them.
MCA: What is next for your writing endeavors?
As I mentioned, this will be a series of life lessons as told through the lens of a charming little dog. I also want to influence parents through these series. It’s a children’s book series focused on the whole family, not just the child.
Each book will serve as a gentle reminder of the values that truly matter, fostering conversations and connections among family members. I believe storytelling has the power to bridge generational gaps and create moments of shared understanding and reflection. By engaging both children and adults, I hope these tales will encourage families to cherish their time together, celebrate their unique bonds, and cultivate a sense of gratitude for the small wonders of everyday life. Through the whimsical adventures of Fluffy Henri, my goal is to spark joy, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
